The Droop series is the solution to a problem I set myself: to find a natural organism which possesses elegant form and beauty in its organic blueprint, and artfully depict it to emphasise its natural qualities. A search sparked by the inherent charm of a waterfall, enthralling on lookers with its alluring form of cascading water tumbling down.
I walked passed this tree every day. The drooping of the Chamaecyparis branches intrigued me as they sway so peacefully in the wind. Eventually I stopped to admire the foliage that hang from the branches, emulating the calming effect waterfalls possess.
The texture of the water colour paper paired with the pointillist application of the charcoal pencil creates an appealing grained surface. The extended vertical plane allows space to appreciate the hanging form of the limbs. The treatment of negative space explores monochromatic range, creates organic borders, and allows limbs to hang in empty space.
These abstracted drawings give full appreciation to the Chamaecyparis tree celebrating its inherent natural qualities: an admiration of organic beauty in what grows from our soils.
